Joseph Sabastian Bivona

BIVONA, JOSEPH SABASTIAN, age 66, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, 2009. He was a resident of the Care Center of Opelika for several months. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Irene and Joseph Bivona. He attended the University of Alabama and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He also served his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard on active duty and in the Reserves. He was the co-owner of The Outlet Company, Inc. with retail clothing stores in Bessemer, Birmingham, and Selma, Alabama. Joey was a lifelong fan of the Crimson Tide, holding the same season tickets to the football games originally begun by his father in 1929. An active member of the Bear Bryant Museum, the Million Dollar Band Society, and Tide Pride, Joe was a generous contributor to the University of Alabama football program. He was also diligent in his contributions to the UA Alumni Association, the College of Business and Commerce, and Denny Chimes Memorial. Joe truly loved the Capstone. Joey is survived by his sister Judy Bivona Larrow and her husband Dr. Bart Larrow of Middlebury, Vermont; his nephew Dr. Bart Larrow, Jr., his wife Cettina, and their son Alexander of Middlebury, Vermont. He had many cousins that he loved dearly: Dr. John Thornton, Sandra Bragan, Debbie Elder, Julie Virciglio, Dr. John Bivona, Jake Bivona, Gigi Stidle, all of Birmingham; Cindy Bruner of Mobile, and Vincent Canzoneri of Austin, Texas. A private family burial will be on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Bessemer. Father Paul of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Holy Trinity-Holy Cross will officiate the graveside service. There will be no visitation hours. Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home is honored to serve the Bivona family.
